The SoC appears to support a wide variety of memory types, and WonderMedia touts the Prizm ‘s “low power consumption,” though further details still haven’t been offered. WonderMedia has not provided any information on these processors, but according to NorhTec, which used the VT in its MicroClient TC, they’re similar to the Prizm but omit certain multimedia extras. The parent company is primarily known for its xbased processors and chipsets for the mobile and embedded markets, including the Eden and Eden ULV, the C7-M ULV, and the bit Via Nano, a 65nm design with an out-of-order execution unit.
At the time, Via said the processors were licensed to help Via and its subsidiaries improve products aimed at mobile phones, set-top boxes, telematics, and personal media players. Engadget’s August posting about the Sylvania netbook may be found here. Information Week’s story citing brisk sales for the device may be found here. Have you invested in one of these cheap netbooks? A Wi-Fi hotspot is a wireless access point that provides Internet access to network devices in public locations such as downtown centers, cafes, airports and hotels. Businesses and schools are increasingly using Wi-Fi hotspots for their internal intranet networks.
Home wireless networks also use similar Wi-Fi technology. Computers and other devices connect to hotspots using a Wi-Fi network adapter. Newer laptop computers contain built-in adapters, but most other computers do not. Wi-Fi network adapters can be purchased and installed separately. Public Wi-Fi hotspots normally require a paid subscription. The sign-up process involves providing credit card information online or by phone and choosing a service plan.
Some service providers offer plans that work at thousands of hotspots throughout the country. A few pieces of technical information are also required to access Wi-Fi hotspots. The network name also called SSID distinguishes hotspot networks from each other. Encryption keys a long series of letters and numbers scramble the network traffic to and from a hotspot; most businesses require these as well. Service providers supply this profile information for their hotspots.
Computers can automatically scan for hotspots within range of their wireless signal. These scans identify the network name SSID of the hotspot allowing the computer to initiate a connection. Instead of using a computer to find hotspots, some people prefer to use a separate gadget called a Wi-Fi finder.
These small devices scan for hotspot signals similarly to computers, and many provide some indication of signal strength to help pinpoint their exact location. Before traveling to a far-away place, the location of Wi-Fi hotspots can be found using online wireless hotspot finder services. The process for connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot works similarly on home, business and public wireless networks.
With the profile network name and encryption settings applied on the wireless network adapter, you initiate the connection from your computer operating system or software that was supplied with the network adapter. Paid or restricted hotspot services will require you to log in with a user name and password the first time you access the Internet.
Although few incidents of hotspot security issues are reported in the press, many people remain skeptical of their safety. Some caution is justified as a hacker with good technical skills can break into your computer through a hotspot and potentially access your personal data.
Taking a few basic precautions will ensure reasonable safety when using Wi-Fi hotspots. First, research the public hotspot service providers and choose only reputable ones who use strong security settings on their networks. Next, ensure you do not accidentally connect to non-preferred hotspots by checking your computer’s settings.
Finally, be aware of your surroundings and watch for suspicious individuals in the vicinity who may be reading your screen or even plotting to steal your computer. Wi-Fi hotspots are becoming an increasingly common form of Internet access. Connecting to a hotspot requires a wireless network adapter, knowledge of the profile information of that hotspot, and sometimes a subscription to a paid service. Computers and Wi-Fi finder gadgets both are capable of scanning the nearby area for Wi-Fi hotspots, and several online services allow you find far-away hotspot locations.
Whether using a home, business or public hotspot, the connection process remains essentially the same. Likewise, as with any wireless network, security issues for Wi-Fi hotspots need to be managed. I search daily for new videos that will help.
Some apparently are for fun and amusement only, but, you’ll sift through them. Question how did you get that netbook to even connect to the internet. We are pulling Excellent Wi-Fi signal in to the netbook from our Home Router, but we aren’t able to connect to the internet.
Says DNS error. We’ve tried everything and nothing works. You have to turn it on every time you connect to the internet. It may be detecting the signal but it doesn’t mean it is initialized. There is a symbol in the lower right corner click on that and turn on it on you have to do that every time you want to connect to the internet from these. Trying to remember what I did When I initially signed onto the internet, there was one blank field in the network settings and I entered the network password in that field and I was on.
The directions that come with the Sylvania Netbook actually show how to do that part. I think there was a checkbox to make my home network my preferred network. Now, I just open the netbook, power on the wi-fi antenna via an icon on the screen, and I seem to be able to go.
Thanks it was driving me crazy. Very nice site! Great lens. I have never had a Sylvania Netbook, but if I ever do and have trouble with it, I know where to start! I accidentally bricked mine a few weeks ago, using a link someone had for an upgrade to Win-CE, leaving me with two icons on the screen, and no programs.. I’ve stuck with the recommendation that you can’t install anything else–another problem with this version of CE, although others have had some success at “hacking” it.
I’ve had to use the reset button fairly often, and its action is a little flaky. I’m holding my breath on reliability–took a chance on that, especially with Augen’s disappearance from the market. For now, it’s very useful and I enjoy using it. These Cheap 7-Inch Netbooks are suitable only for dedicated hackers! But if you’re already stuck with one of these, read on, as help is on the way. Preliminary research on this device quickly revealed that it, and its many cheap spin-offs, has a notorious reputation.
And it’s quite obvious that almost all of the retailers of these devices are going out of their way to be unhelpful. But, on a more positive note: Here’s a complete and informative 30 page User Manual for your netbook: Titled, simply, as “usermanual.
And, while you’re on that ftp page, be sure to download “winCE6freeware. The 4. The first thing the user of one of these devices needs to do is open up the internal battery compartment, and unplug and remove the internal 7. That’s right, completely remove the battery and simply run the netbook off the plug-in OEM 9 Volt wall wart, or maybe a 7. The 9 Volt power jack in the back of the netbook fits a standard 4.
But a custom made rechargeable internal battery pack, 7. A 3 long x 2 wide battery pack will nest, half-deep, in the original internal battery compartment -without the original cover. And the CPU runs much cooler when powered by the improvised internal 7. But most nickel-metal hydride batteries will self-discharge about 0. Unfortunately, the individual AA batteries, of the 7.
The unit is easily opened up by turning it upside down and removing 12 screws, of which 2 of the screws are fine-thread screws that screw in to the sheet-aluminum underside of the keyboard. Unplug the internal battery pack, and with a thin, sharp knife, carefully separate and pop open the bottom of the plastic case. For the CPU, I superglued a flathead aluminum bolt onto it, drilled a hole into the underside of the plastic mini-laptop case, and, with an aluminum nut, attached a 4″x2.
As mentioned, the Wi-Fi module in the device also runs way too hot, but the remedy for this is not as simple. The Wi-Fi module is a small. Here I carefully peeled off the Wi-Fi module and removed the foam tape, as it traps heat and causes heat damage.
I then soldered additional lengths of wire to the original 4 wires, superglued an aluminum heat sink onto the Wi-Fi CPU, and routed it through the right hinged joint of the video monitor case, and attached it inside the upper-right of the plastic case of the video monitor.
I then drilled This also positions the Wi-Fi module for much better reception, solving the common gripe many users report of poor Wi-Fi range. I would upload photos of the modifications, but they would only cause serious misunderstandings with customer service staffs. The next thing one should do is Google “winCE6freeware. Also Google and download “MioPocket 4. The OEM bundled software on many of these 7-inch netbooks is lacking. And there are not many apps available for Windows CE 6. But these two downloads are definitely a good start.
They both include browsers, game emulators, utilities, media players, games, scientific calculators, and even spreadsheets and word processors. Google “qcpparm. Open the “winCE6soft” folder and browse and try out the numerous.
Open the “MioAutoRun” folder and the subfolder “Programs” and browse and try out the numerous. Two valuable softwares in these downloads are: UCWeb Browser: Although it runs in Chinese mode only, it is intuitive, allowing one to bookmark their favorite English websites Google, EarthLink, facebook, etc. Minimo: Yet another excellent internet browser, which runs quite well on Windows CE 6.
Of particular note is the opening home screen with quick access to Google, maps, local weather, etc.. But some of its features may exceed the limited resources of the 7-inch netbook. I have had almost no success in downloading and manually installing. And while almost all of these cheap 7-Inch Netbooks will long be remembered for what they aren’t, one needs to focus on what they are, and can do: – Almost all of these devices have built-in stereo speakers, two 1.
And there’s “Calc98CE”, an excellent scientific calculator. I had to straighten out a paper clip, and then fashion a tiny hook with needle-nose pliers, and pull the damaged micro-spring and mechanism completely out of the SD card slot. It now works just fine this way, as I simply left a 16 GB SD card permanently in place but can easily be removed, if needed.
I tried, at home, to log into our secure WiFi, but was unable to get it to work. But it still works just fine in many WiFi coffee shops. But there is somewhat of a silver lining in this deficiency in that it is a correct move in the direction of a paperless society. For example, I used to do a daily download of the local TV broadcast schedule, and inkjet print it out, both sides, on a landscape 11×8. The PDF can then be quickly and easily viewed by my family, as needed.
This will cause even the fastest, most skilled typist to feel like they’re all thumbs on the keyboard. As mentioned, the netbook has two USB 1. But many mice, keyboards, multi-port USB hubs, flash drives, and SD card readers work quite well with the netbook.
I haven’t found a webcam that will work, but many digital cameras can be connected, by USB, and the stored photos viewed and copied. Here is just a partial list of the many aliases this Windows CE 6.
As these 7-inch netbooks will not Activesync with your desktop computer, this is the time to format be sure to select the FAT 32 file system option a 16 GB, class 10, SD card, to serve as the “Storage Card” in your 7-inch netbook. One such example is the driver for the internal battery pack. Many have complained about failures of the internal battery, not knowing that the new operating system they reflashed onto their netbook was not written for the existing motherboard.
Just to be sure, I broke open the internal “8. The battery will normally run the netbook for about 1. Its a waste of money! Bought this so my kids could surf the web at home won’t even do that this item is apiece of carp do not buy it. One person found this helpful. I bought this as a “netbook” for my 7 year old granddaughter and it was too small even for her.
Sent it back and got a refund. I bought two of these for my grandchildren last christmas. To date my grandson has never used his because he can’t do anything with it except email.
My granddaughter could not do anything except email with it either. At this time it is deader than a door nail. It was a complete waste of money. Dificult to use. Maybe I will learn. The Web Browser is out of date since December last year. You Tube videos do not work. Windows Media Player is also a non-starter.
Downloads do not work, because the machine freezes, or complains of insufficient memory. Most websites work slowly or do not open up at all. The only programs that work reliably are two games – Free Cell and Solitaire.
Shame on Sylvania. That Company should pull that Product off the internet and their sales outlets, before Clients report the scam to the Governmental authorities in the U. How much longer they feel that they can get away with fooling people all over the world with that Product?
And, yes, this is the first time that I got fooled and robbed over the internet. It is not Amazon’s fault, but that dishonest Supplier who also did not come clean with Amazon.
